Chelsea’s Reece James will be out of action for a “minimum” of one more week after twisting his ankle against Manchester City.
The England defender will miss Wednesday’s Champions Leagueclash with Juventus and Saturday’s game against Southampton, with Thomas Tuchel unable to give a precise date for his return.
James limped out of the 1-0 defeat to City before half-time and Tuchel said: “It’s still very painful, and it will come down to pain management in the end, how much he can accept. But right now we are looking at a minimum of one more week.”
Chelsea will also be without Mason Mount in Turin, with the midfielder still to recover from a knock, while N’Golo Kante has been ruled out after testing positive for Covid-19.
Christian Pulisic is also out with an ankle injury picked up on international duty.
It leaves Chelsea short of a number of key players for their second game in Group H after kicking off the defence of their Champions League crown with victory against Zenit.
Tuchel tried to take the pressure off his players, insisting Chelsea are not favourites to retain the trophy, despite triumphing last season.
“It is hard to be seen as an underdog when you have just won a title, but I think we came from a role as not favourites last season and we got better with every match,” he said.
“Then maybe we were seen as real contenders very late in the competition, that can sometimes help.
“Now, it is of course easy to make us favourites. We have the experience that it gives us a higher value to play against us, a higher motivation for the opposition to play against us and we have to accept this because it is our fault, we have won this competition.
“It is no secret that we like this role, to perhaps come as an outsider or a challenger for this title. I think we are.
“I don’t think we are favourites but we have shown everybody the performances we are capable of and that is now on us to make ourselves free from these expectations and for them to not become our expectations.”
